Smart Meter Replacement Project

Project Overview

The City of Haines City is replacing older water meters across the community to improve operations in water-usage readings and enhance the overall water system. Properties built before October 2019 will receive both a new water meter and a new meter box. The updated meters use more advanced technology, allowing for improved performance, quicker leak detection, and more efficient customer support. These improvements will help maintain a reliable and effective water service for all residents and businesses.

Water Meter Replacement Project – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Installation Process

Do I need to be home during the meter replacement?

No, you don’t need to be home as long as the installer can get to the meter box. If it’s behind a locked gate or blocked, please make sure it’s unlocked and easy to reach.

How long does the installation take?

Replacing the meter and meter box will take at most two hours.

Who will perform the installation?

Vanguard Utility Inc. will do the work; they were chosen by the City through a formal selection process.

Will my water service be turned off?

Yes, your water service will be interrupted. The water may be off for up to one hour while the new meter is installed.

The New Meters

What is different about the new meters?

The new meters use advanced cellular technology to transmit usage readings automatically, removing the need for drive-by or manual reads and improving billing accuracy.  They also include access to the EyeOnWater customer portal, where you can:

  • See near real-time water use (by hour, day, month, or year)
  • Set leak alerts and get notified by text or email
  • Manage multiple accounts or properties in one place

Are smart meters safe and secure?

Yes, the meter data is encrypted and transmitted using secure industry standard systems. The meters record water consumption only.  No personal information is stored or transmitted.

Will I see a charge on my bill for the new meter?

No, the meter replacement project has been funded through reserves as a result of a federal grant.

How will I be notified?

Customers will receive a mailed post card prior to installation. Then day of, the meter technician will knock on your door to let you know they arrived and that you have a short amount of time prior to services being interrupted.

What should I do to prepare for installation?

Please make sure the area around your meter is accessible and secure your pets.

After Installation

What if I experience problems after the meter is replaced?

Please call the City’s Designated Project Line at 863-421-3387 or email us at hcmeterprojec@hainescity.com. If it is an emergency after hours, please call 863-421-3636
