Evil Twin WiFi

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has alerted residents about a cyber scam called "evil twin" attacks. In these attacks, hackers create fake Wi-Fi networks with names similar to trusted ones, like those found in hotels, airports, or coffee shops, to trick people into connecting. They may also create counterfeit apps that mimic popular ones.

To stay safe, Moody suggests:

  • Verifying Wi-Fi network legitimacy with the provider before connecting.
  • Ensuring websites show “https://” or a padlock icon for secure browsing.
  • Downloading apps only from official stores and checking reviews for authenticity.
  • Using a VPN to protect data on public Wi-Fi.
  • Turning off file sharing and auto Wi-Fi connections.
  • Avoiding sensitive transactions over public Wi-Fi.

Victims are encouraged to report scams to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Computer Crime Center and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
