HCPD and Social Media

In modern society, social media is a way of life. It’s a way of communicating. It’s a way of connecting. It’s a means of staying informed.

The Haines City Police Department is active on three main platforms: Facebook, Twitter and Nextdoor. Each are used in a different capacity, but with a purpose.

Facebook is the most used platform by HCPD and is primarily used for engagement purposes.  With a 100% response rate, the department is always eager to listen to residents’ concerns or help answer questions.

On Facebook, residents are likely to find pictures of officers interacting with the youth, community or being recognized for going above and beyond. Facebook is also a place to find out about HCPD’s community events, collection drives and news stories about the agency.

HCPD will use Facebook as a means for seeking tips or information from the public. It’s also a means for providing information and helpful reminders like new enacted legislation that affects residents and safety tips, including the nightly “9 p.m. routine”.

Engagement is part of Twitter as well and tweets often contain Facebook links. Where Twitter will be most vital will be in breaking news situations.

In situations where major developments are unfolding, Twitter will be the quickest, most effective means for keeping the public informed. It will also be the method suggested to media members for staying up to date on what is happening in real-time. Twitter is used for traffic updates as well.

Nextdoor is used as a combination of Facebook and Twitter. Unlike Facebook and Twitter where anyone from anywhere can “like” or “follow”, Nextdoor is an application that connects communities and neighborhoods. All engagement on Nextdoor is with those who either live or work inside the municipal boundaries of Haines City.

Nextdoor posts are often duplicates of engagement posts that are seen on Facebook, but there will also be traffic updates. Nextdoor is not monitored as closely as Facebook and in the event of a major developing situation, would not be updated in the manner that Twitter will.

During the second quarter of 2019, the Haines City Police Department reached nearly 9,000 people per day on Facebook. Tweets reached more than 264,000 accounts for the quarter and posts were seen more than 32,000 times on Nextdoor. We hope residents will take the time to follow all of our social media accounts.
